How to Make Your Rental Apartment Feel like Home

February 28, 2019
A man and woman are moving into a new house with a dog.

Renting has become increasingly common, especially young people who are avoiding skyrocketing home prices and interested in having the freedom of moving at a moment’s notice. The downside to renting? Not being able to make changes to your space, including painting, small remodeling projects (updating the cabinets or installing new backsplash), or replacing the flooring. Luckily, with a little effort and clever styling, your new space will feel like home in no time!

Unpack Quickly

Let’s face it – The worst part of moving is the packing and unpacking process. Once you’re in your new space, make it a priority to unpack your belongings as quickly as possible. Having to dig through the boxes every day for clothing, cooking utensils, and your toiletries will not make you feel at home. Don’t worry about how organized your belongings are in your cabinets, closets, and drawers, you can always reorganize them later!

Work with What You’ve Got

Once you’ve unpacked, take a look around your new space. What color are the walls? What type of flooring is in each of the rooms? How much natural light is there? This is your time to shine! Incorporate fun, colorful rugs in spaces that seem dull, get creative with your storage, and experiment with lighting.

Make a Few Inexpensive Swaps and Updates

Most rental spaces have simple features and updating them isn’t always possible, but when it is, making the smallest updates will make a huge difference!

Here are a few things you might want to consider swapping out in your new space:

  • Showerheads
  • Cabinet knobs and pulls
  • Dress your windows with curtains
  • Install removable wallpaper to add personality to a space

Incorporate Sentimental Items

From trinkets collected during travels by yourself or with friends and family to pictures drawn by your nieces and nephews, incorporating sentimental items into your new space to make it feel like home in no time! Incorporating these items will also help spruce up your decor, especially when you’re on a tight budget.
